The Rebbe teaches us many things. There are many things that the Rebbe repeats often. But there are a few that stand out and which are always brought up by the Rebbe. For example, the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov that “Everything a person sees or hears is a Hora’ah (instruction) on how to serve Hashem“. The Rebbe once expressed how he said this teaching publicly more than 1,000 times, without exaggeration!
This quote is said almost always at the beginning of a Farbrengen, when the Rebbe learns a lesson in Avodas Hashem from the special day, happenings during that week, the setup of the calendar, world events etc.
Two more quotes that the Rebbe brings – very often together – are כל מעשיך יהיו לשם שמים and בכל דרכיך דעהו. From these we learn that our lives, and everything in them, our circumstances, events, things we own, things we know, our interests, and even our desires, can and should be channeled into serving Hashem, and particularly in creating a דירה בתחתונים in this world, including in our personal world.
So a large, perhaps constant part of the life of a Yid is to learn these הוראות…
Here’s a short anecdote about the Rebbe’s request from Reb Velvl Greene, (quoted from Chabad.org): “Why don’t you keep a journal, just a few notes at the end of the day, and see if you can find the Divine message?” If he needed help finding the meaning, they could discuss it together.
(Professor Greene never did end up sending his notes to the Rebbe, but a collection of his stories and their lessons have been published.)
